"Some people know the song before they know my name, and I've made peace with that. I'm a songwriter and keyboard player from West Baltimore who started out spinning records and playing a Casio in a clothing store window near Lexington Market. Thommy Davis and the Basement Boys gave me room to grow, and in 1989 they signed me as a songwriter. Two chords I'd been hearing in my head at a piano at UMBC became 'Gypsy Woman,' and that record went around the world. I'm a quiet man and a family man, and I've always let the music do the talking. But I've learned that when the people who made the music stay silent, somebody else tells the story, and they tell it wrong. House music came out of the church and out of rooms where people who had very little found each other. That's the music I still make: live players, real soul, no shortcuts. Soul over software. Still Standing... Still Here!!!"

In 2006, Neal launched Urban Retro Music Group (URMG) to ignite a soulful, live‑instrument revolution in house music—a bold response to an era dominated by overproduced, synthetic sounds. More than just a label, URMG became a cultural movement, bridging the roots of soul, jazz, and funk with the energy of underground house. Through carefully curated releases and the SoulPowerRadio platform, it champions social consciousness, authentic musicianship, and the raw emotion that built the foundation of dance music.
URMG isn’t about chasing trends—it’s about preserving the real feel of music. From lush string arrangements and live percussion to conscious lyricism, the label keeps the legacy of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, and Donny Hathaway alive while introducing a new generation to timeless grooves. Neal Conway co‑produced and co‑wrote Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless), the groundbreaking 1991 house anthem performed by Crystal Waters. With its hypnotic organ riff and the unforgettable “la da dee, la da da” hook, the track combined minimalist deep house grooves with a subtle yet powerful social message about homelessness. It became a global phenomenon, topping charts in over 15 countries, earning platinum certifications, and shaping the sound of early ’90s dance music. To this day, it remains one of the most iconic and influential house records ever created.
